URGENT ACTION
Update on Bill C-33 (Biofuels)
On May 13, KAIROS issued an urgent
action asking our constituency to contact their MPs and request
that they oppose Bill C-33, the law that mandates 5% ethanol content
in gasoline sold in Canada.
The KAIROS constituency responded quickly
and emphatically in their communication to Parliamentarians. Regrettably,
on May 28, Parliament voted to pass the bill on Third Reading and
sent it on to the Senate, which is expected to approve the bill
quickly.
While the Bloc Quebecois and NDP voted against the bill,
the Liberal and Conservative parties supported it. A May 30 article
in the Globe and Mail gives some indication of the kind of industry
lobbying that went on behind the scene … all the more important
that we make our voices heard to counter the undemocratic influence
of big money and big lobby. KAIROS will continue to advocate for
energy policies that are sustainable and that promote the human
rights of those most vulnerable in our world.
Thanks to all who
responded to our urgent action request.
