KAIROS virtual UN event to spotlight women’s key role in peace and sustainable development, March 22

WHAT

The intersection of conflict, the climate crisis and economic injustice and women’s powerful role in peace and sustainable development, will be the focus of KAIROS Canada’s interactive workshop, Women peacebuilders build back with environmental and economic security, a virtual parallel event at the 2022 United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66), held March 22 from 10 a.m. to noon EST.

This event will include English, French and Spanish translation.

WHY

The intersection of conflict, the climate crisis and economic injustice is often overlooked in policy and practice. Moreover, the gender dimensions of security and climate issues, primarily led by women, are often not r understood, prioritized, or integrated in security and climate policies. In the workshop, KAIROS and its global Women, Peace and Security partners will spotlight these gaps and the powerful role that local women and girls play in peacebuilding, climate action and economic development.

Since 2019, KAIROS and its Women of Courage partners have participated in the CSW to highlight their work and advocate for sustainable, just and equitable peace. KAIROS’ virtual workshop aligns with CSW66’s theme: “achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environment and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes.”

Canadian participants will be encouraged to contact their Members of Parliament to urge the federal government to increase its overseas development assistance to reach the international standard by 2030, meet its international climate commitments and ensure that funding reaches grassroots women’s rights and peacebuilding organizations.
