Eliminating Fossil Fuel Subsidies Through a Robust Assessment Framework
On May 29, KAIROS joined over 100 environmental, human rights, and climate justice organizations to send a letter to the Prime Minister about eliminating fossil fuel subsidies through a robust assessment framework.
Canada has committed to eliminating fossil fuel subsidies by the end of this year. To meet that goal, the government is developing an Assessment Framework to guide decisions on what gets defined as a subsidy. This policy presents a key moment for Canada to show global leadership in eliminating public financing for fossil fuels. To keep us on track, the assessment framework must be released before Parliament rises in June.
The letter demands that the federal government use a robust definition of what gets counted as a subsidy and align the assessment of a subsidy’s “efficiency” with Canada’s climate commitments.
