Voices from COP27 – Ongoing Work for Climate Justice
In November 2022, KAIROS and For the Love of Creation (FLC) supported a delegation of global partners, and Indigenous partners and youth from Canada to COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The delegation was framed around the theme, Decolonizing Climate Action, with the goal of bringing the voices and experiences of women peacebuilders, land defenders, youth and Indigenous peoples to COP27 to raise awareness of their critical role in addressing climate change. One of the key objectives of the delegation was to increase understanding of the urgency and importance of meaningful participation and leadership of women human rights defenders and peacebuilders, youth, and Indigenous peoples from Canada and the Global South in decision-making spaces related to climate policy, programming, and action.

The work to amplify these voices continues and we checked back in with some of the delegates to see how their experience at COP27 has shaped their work in communities and in advocating for climate justice. Here are their updates:
Hana Elias Antoun Kare shares a powerful message for climate justice and explains how COP27 was a great opportunity to raise the voice of women in Palestine. Hana is a researcher, trainer and peace activist with Wiam: Palestine Conflict Transformation Centre, West Bank, Palestine.
Paul Belisario shares how the COP27 experience helped to forward the rights of Indigenous peoples, build up Indigenous youth organizations globally, and strengthen advocacy to end the criminalization of Indigenous land defenders. Paul is Assistant Global Coordinator for the International Indigenous Peoples Movement for Self Determination and Liberation, Philippines.
Yusra Shafi shares how her COP27 experience has allowed her to connect and build dialogue for climate action in Canada. Yusra is an international student from Kuwait at the University of Toronto, volunteer and former intern at Development and Peace.
Kelly Campo shares how her COP27 experience has allowed her to go back Columbia to her organization and share what she learned about climate action through her interactions with other groups from around the world. Kelly is a member of the coordinating committee of the Organización Femenina Popular (OFP) in Colombia.
