Call for Applications – Join KAIROS’ Strengthening Voices for a Just Transition Project
Are you concerned about climate change and a just transition? As the world transitions from its dependence on fossil fuels, so much work needs to be done to ensure our communities are supported and policymakers held accountable.
As we build a new low-carbon economy, we have an opportunity to do things differently. Maybe you already have some ideas? What does your vision of the future look like?
KAIROS is seeking young adults to participate in its Strengthening Voices for a Just Transition project. This project aims to nurture a cohort of up to 12 changemakers to help guide us through the next stages of the energy transition and strengthen just transition policies and programs with principles from Indigenous peoples, young people, and those most affected by the climate crisis.
We are looking for applicants between the ages of 18-30 from the following four locations:
- Edmonton, Alberta (Treaty 6 Territory and within the Métis homelands and Métis Nation of Alberta Region 4)
- Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis)
- Sarnia, Ontario (Traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy)
- Sydney, Nova Scotia (Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People)
This project welcomes a diversity of lived experience and knowledge and encourages Indigenous people, Black people, people of colour, and international students to apply. All are welcome.
Participants are required to participate in a one-day dialogue in their community between May-June (Saskatoon dialogue will be Saturday, May 25; dates for other locations to be confirmed). Participants will then gather as a cohort online for training, learning, discussion, and community-building, for approximately eight sessions between June and September (dates to be decided with participants). Sessions will include guest speakers and trainers from Canada’s climate policy community, Indigenous leaders and KAIROS’ partners in the global South.
Participants will then be encouraged to share their vision for a just transition with decision-makers in the fall. KAIROS will accompany participants in setting up meetings with members of Parliament, provincial representatives, municipal councilors, and more.
A closing online event will be planned with participants and project communities in January 2025.
KAIROS will provide each participant with:
- Opportunities to learn from climate policy experts, Indigenous leaders, and climate justice advocates from the Global South;
- Workshops to strengthen advocacy and community skills;
- A platform for community-building and exchange with other participants;
- A certificate of completion;
- Letter of reference from KAIROS staff; and
- A modest honorarium
