In 2009, Mexican activist Mariano Abarca was assassinated for his role in resisting Canadian mining company Blackfire Exploration. The acts and omissions of the Canadian Embassy put his life in greater risk. In 2018, the family and allies submitted a complaint to the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner requesting an investigation. The Commissioner refused to investigate. Now that decision is under judicial review. The family and its allies demand that Mariano’s case receive a full and impartial investigation and that binding legal mechanisms be developed and enforced by the Canadian government to prevent future harm by embassy officials and Canadian companies overseas.
