Giving Tuesday – it’s not too late to give!

Agnes Awak

“I was born in war, grew up in war, married in war, became a mother in war, and now am a grandmother in war. When will we experience peace in South Sudan?”

These were the words of Agnes Wasuk Petia of South Sudan to a gathering in Toronto two years ago. This Giving Tuesday, please support Agnes and other brave, persistent women peace-builders!

Read more below:

As the Coordinator of the National Women’s Program of the South Sudan Council of Churches, one of KAIROS’ Women of Courage: Women, Peace and Security partner organizations, Agnes is a leading voice among the courageous, creative and tenacious women trying to bring peace to their country.

While 2019 is ending without a resolution to the conflict in South Sudan, these women have not given up their hopes, dreams, and determination to see peace take root.

Nor have other Women, Peace and Security partners in the West Bank, Colombia, the Philippines, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The long-term conflicts in these regions vary in many ways, but a common element is the presence of women at the forefront of peace-building efforts.

The women-led organizations that KAIROS’ Women, Peace and Security program supports are striving for sustainable, just and inclusive peace in their regions. They want to see women participating in peace-making processes at all levels. Counseling, legal support, human rights training and accompaniment to survivors of gender-based violence are essential components of their work.

Please support them this Giving Tuesday! Every dollar you donate to Women of Courage: Women, Peace and Security partners in South Sudan, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the West Bank will generate an additional $3 in funding from Global Affairs Canada, which is helping to fund this program.

A donation of any amount will make a difference:

• $50 provides a mediation session facilitated by Héritiers de la Justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo to assist a survivor of gender-based violence with social reintegration;

• $75 will enable Wi’am: Palestinian Conflict Resolution Centre to offer psycho-social support, human rights training, and economic empowerment training to up to 20 women from four villages in the West Bank;

• $100 makes it possible for the Organización Femenina Popular in Colombia to bring together five women for psycho-social support and education on their rights;

• $400 helps the National Women’s Programme of the South Sudan Council of Churches to train a woman human rights defender to advocate for women’s political participation.

Agnes told us in 2017 that, “Through your support, we feel courageous. KAIROS’ support has an impact.” We hope that you will join us as we stay the course with Agnes and other woman peace-makers.

Thank you for your generosity!
