Five ways to honour Indigenous History Month

June is Indigenous History Month — a time to recognize, learn from, and uplift the voices, truths, and brilliance of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Turtle Island.

Here are five meaningful ways to honour this month (and beyond):

Learn the real history
Go beyond what you learned in school. Learn about residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, the Indian Act, and the rich traditions that have survived colonization. Truth comes before reconciliation.

Support Indigenous creators & businesses
Buy from Indigenous artists, authors, makers and entrepreneurs. Share their work. Your dollar is a form of activism.

Attend local events & ceremonies
Look for powwows, speaker panels, film screenings and cultural events in your community. Listen with an open heart and mind.

Read Indigenous books
Start with authors like Richard Wagamese, Eden Robinson, Tanya Talaga, Joshua Whitehead, or Katherena Vermette. Fiction or nonfiction — stories heal, teach and open doors.

Reflect and take action
Ask yourself: What can I do to be a better ally? How am I helping dismantle colonial systems? How am I uplifting Indigenous voices in my work, home or community?

Honouring Indigenous History Month means learning, unlearning, and standing in solidarity — not just in June but always
