The Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative calls for international cooperation to end the expansion of coal, oil and gas production, phase out existing production fairly and accelerate a just transition to renewable energy.

The Fossil-Fuel Treaty is grounded in scientific evidence, which states that limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires most remaining fossil fuel reserves to stay in the ground.
Kairos endorsed the Treaty in 2020, joining faith-based organizations worldwide in calling for a just and equitable phase-out of fossil fuels. Notably, in the transition to clean energy, we call for the responsible extraction of critical minerals, with strong protections for human rights, Indigenous Peoples’ rights and the environment.
