May 5 marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S), a day set aside to honour the lives that have been lost, the families left in pain, and the strength of Indigenous communities fighting for justice and recognition. This day shines a light on the disproportionate violence faced by Indigenous women and gender-diverse people across Turtle Island, and the systemic issues—such as racism, colonialism, and inadequate law enforcement response—that contribute to these ongoing tragedies. It is a time to mourn, to remember, and to reaffirm a collective commitment to ensuring safety, respect and justice for Indigenous people.

Communities can support MMIWG2S Day by participating in awareness events, wearing red as a symbol of remembrance, and amplifying the voices of Indigenous leaders and families. Educating oneself and others about the history and ongoing impacts of colonialism, advocating for policy changes, and supporting Indigenous-led organizations are also meaningful actions. Even small gestures—like attending a local vigil, sharing resources online, or displaying red dresses in public spaces—can help honour those who are missing or have been lost, and send a powerful message of solidarity and care.

May we carry their names with us not only on this day, but every day—and may our actions help build a future where all Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people are safe, valued and free.
