The hustle and bustle of people around COP30 in Brazil

Everything at once now. People who feel the pulse of life on Earth are in a hurry. The climate collapse of our Common Home is not ‘knocking on the door, it is sitting on the sofa, occupying our daily lives and posing a real threat to human survival. The barking of Nature in imbalance brings anxiety, suffering and increases inequalities. It is a cry that drives us to urgent action.
We experienced COP in a climate of courage, with warmth and intensity. Not only the days in Belém, but the entire preparatory process, built step by step, with our feet on the ground, throughout the year.
By recognizing the value of diversity, we were able to weave together convergences, despite our differences. Some socio-environmental organizations yield to market mechanisms as possible climate solutions; other groups are largely aligned with the Brazilian government and refuse to question it; and there are also networks and collectives that remain firm in their analysis and critical positioning. With differences on the table and without shying away from complex discussions, entities and movements managed to carry out numerous activities inside and outside the COP. People’s tribunals, debates, complaints, announcements, marches, occupations, manifestos, films, publications and culture. The result of so much hustle and coordination is not just symbolic. It was a beautiful display of the potential of popular self-organization. Unlike the last COPs, this time our voices were not silenced.
In the training process ahead of COP30 carried out by the Latin American Network of Women Defenders, we understand that solutions based on the market and the financialization of Nature are unacceptable. Our rivers, mountains, bodies, biomes and future are not for sale. The answer to the civilizational crisis we face will never come from corporations and the logic of financial speculation on forests and life.
The warnings from renowned scientists and Indigenous authorities are clear: the situation is extremely serious. We need multilateralism, collaboration, bold goals and the implementation of ambitious agreements. It is therefore regrettable that the COP has lost its purpose. The inconsistencies of the official space are an affront to collective intelligence. Several initiatives have exposed, with art and humor, corporate and government greenwashing propaganda. The more scandalous the contradictions, the stronger our convictions become.
The failure of the negotiations is not surprising; there were no expectations in this environment, historically captured by lobbyists from the mining and oil extraction sectors. As widely denounced, the COP has become a business counter, a space for the performance of green capitalism.
What needs to be done immediately is to reduce consumption and show unrestricted respect for territories and peoples and their traditional ways of life. As the Indigenous people shout: “we are the answer.”
The rush to COP and the fervor of actions in Belém are over. We have planted seeds and nurtured those who fight for life. The storm will not pass. The daily mission continues: to pressure local governments, fight for feminist climate justice and confront companies that violate rights and destroy nature. Some say that abandoning fossil fuels and mining is not possible. To those who think so, we say: we are increasingly experts in achieving the impossible.

O corre corre do povo ao redor da COP30 no Brasil
Tudo ao mesmo tempo agora. O povo que sente o pulsar da vida da Terra está com pressa. O colapso climático de nossa Casa Comum não está ‘batendo na porta’, ele está sentado no sofá, ocupou o cotidiano e é uma ameaça real à sobrevivência humana. O latido da Natureza em desequilíbrio traz ansiedade, sofrimento e amplia as desigualdades. É um grito que nos impulsiona para a ação urgente.
Vivemos a COP no clima de coragem, com calor e intensidade. Não apenas os dias em Belém, mas todo o caminho preparatório, construído passo a passo, com os pés no chão, ao longo de todo o ano.
Ao reconhecer o valor da diversidade conseguimos tecer convergências, apesar das diferenças. Algumas organizações socioambientais cedem aos mecanismos de mercado como soluções climáticas possíveis; outros grupos estão amplamente alinhados com o governo brasileiro e se recusam a questioná-lo; e também existem as redes e coletivos que se mantêm firmes na análise e posicionamento crítico. Com as divergências na mesa e sem fugir das discussões complexas, as entidades e movimentos conseguiram realizar inúmeras atividades dentro e fora da COP. Tribunais populares, debates, denúncias, anúncios, marchas, ocupações, manifestos, filmes, publicações e cultura. O resultado de tanta correria e articulação não é apenas simbólico. Foi uma bela amostra do potencial da auto-organização popular. Diferente das últimas COPs, dessa vez nossas vozes não foram silenciadas.
No processo de formação frente à COP30 realizado pela Red Latinoamericana de Mujeres Defensoras, entendemos que as soluções baseadas no mercado e na financeirização da Natureza, são inaceitáveis. Nossos rios, montanhas, corpos, biomas e futuro não estão à venda. A resposta para a crise civilizatória que enfrentamos jamais virá das corporações e da lógica da especulação financeira das florestas e da vida.
Os alertas de renomados cientistas e autoridades indígenas é claro: a situação é gravíssima. Precisamos do multilateralismo, de colaboração, de metas ousadas e da implementação de acordos ambiciosos. Por isso é lamentável que a COP tenha perdido seu propósito. As incongruências do espaço oficial são uma afronta à inteligência coletiva. Diversas iniciativas desmascararam, com arte e humor, as propagandas de greenwashing empresariais e governamentais. Quanto mais escandolasas as contradições mais fortes ficam as nossas convicções.
O fracasso das negociações não surpreende, não havia expectativa neste ambiente, historicamente capturado por lobistas do setor extrativista mineiro e petroleiro. Como amplamente denunciado, a COP se tornou um balcão de negócios, um espaço para a performace do capitalismo verde.
O que precisa ser feito imediatamente é a redução do consumo e o respeito irrestrito aos territórios e povos e seus modos de vida tradicionais. Como gritam os indígenas: “a resposta somos nós”.
Acabou o corre o corre rumo à COP e a fervor de ações em Belém. Plantamos sementes e nutrimos quem luta pela vida. A tempestade não vai passar. Segue a missão cotidiana de pressionar os governos locais, lutar por justiça climática feminista e enfrentar as empresas violadoras de direitos e destruidoras da Natureza.
Há quem diga que abandonar os combustíveis fósseis e a mineração não é possível. Para quem pensa assim, afirmamos: estamos cada vez mais especialistas em realizar o impossível.
