The Climate Witness Project
Have you ever asked, “What could I or my congregation possibly do about climate change?” If so, you’re not alone. The Climate Witness Project is a grassroots network of faith communities who take action on climate change with public policy advocacy, energy stewardship, prayer, awareness raising and education.
Launched by World Renew and the Christian Reformed Church’s Office of Social Justice, the Climate Witness Project now includes hundreds of individuals from more than 290 congregations and campus groups—representing over 20 denominations! Partners are supported by regional organizers across the country to learn together and take locally appropriate actions.
For example, across North America over 400 people registered for movie screenings as part of the Climate Witness Project’s The Story of Plastic series. Participants were invited to watch a free screening of the film The Story of Plastic and then sign up for one of six discussion groups facilitated by regional organizers.
In the words of one participant, “I love taking part in events like these! I really valued the session and hearing the input of others especially since we had a very diverse group. The group was filled with commitment and I personally get a renewal of energy by speaking with others who are motivated to make positive changes for the betterment of the world. Thank you for offering this opportunity to gather.” From this opportunity many participants joined the ‘Plastics Free July’ Challenge and found ways to decrease their use of plastic.
So how can you join in this journey with other people of faith? You and your faith community can join the Climate Witness Project as partners. Then, take the first step of advocating for meaningful policy commitments. As legislators work to provide relief and recovery from COVID-19, we need solutions that better prepare for future disasters and crises by reducing health risks and addressing underlying economic, racial, and health inequities that make recovery more challenging. As part of this, you can advocate to end fossil fuel subsidies and fund green energy projects as part of recovery planning. Contact the Climate Witness Project to learn more.
